Gentleman from the Canes

Welcome back to the banks of the Nolichucky river Greene & Washington Counties, Tennessee-David (Davy) Crockett's birthplace. At this location these 2 counties are only seperated by a gorgeous farmland creek know as the Limestone. This photo is what state archaeologists consider to be a historically correct lodge Crockett would have been born to in 1786. If this were your home you are not use to many comforts. Dirt floor, sleep in one corner & eat in the other. A photo of the historically incorrect cabin, which stood for years at this state park, can be seen at the top of page 1 here at TennesseeLead. A good home site for an early pioneer family would have been a good site for native Indians 100-200 years prior to Crockett. This seems to be the case because local college students are doing an archaeological dig on a hut site. They have found arrow points, broken pottery & very small clear glass beads which we were told were from Europe. All of their findings will eventually be on display at the park. Hope to make it back to show you more of the things that are happening on the banks of the Nolichucky.

A civil war oddity. For your consideration one spencer hull with the bullet removed & then the bullet has been fully inserted, nose first, back into the hull. The bullet is firmly down inside the hull. I have dug 2 spencer hulls just like this one & seen a couple others. So by no means a one of a kind relic. My theory is someone needed to start a camp fire, remove bullet & pour the gun powder into the kindling, light match & you have a campfire. So now what do I do with a useless bullet & hull? Fully insert bullet into hull nose first, throw to ground. Dug from the Rutledge, Tenn area...one of the first burgs Longstreet passed thru as he left from the Seige at Knoxville.

First home of 17th US President Andrew Johnson at Greeneville, Tenn. Johnson succeeded Abraham Lincoln after he was assiginated at the end of the civil war. Johnson was the only southern Senator to retain his seat in the US Senate at the outbreak of the civil war.....a Union loyalist from a confederate state. At Johnson's request Lincoln exempted Tenn from the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863.....there would be no freed slaves here. Confederate General John Hunt Morgan was shot & killed some 500 yards from this structure.
