Welcome to extreme NE Tenn....any farther & y'alls gonna be ins North Carolina. This is the Old Forge wilderness area of Greene County. During the civil war these mountain tops were dotted with small iron ore furnaces & were "guideposts" for travel thru this very steep region....much like a lighthouse guides a ship's pilot. The next mtn over, Kelly Gap, is mentioned in civil war literature & part of that furance still stands. In many cases these passes were the only way in or out. Union pilots knew this....so did the bushwachers & deserters. Local readings describe these areas as ambush/killing zones. Much of this area now resides in the Cherokee National Forest.

The old Lutheran Church at Mosheim. A true 1 room church built in the 1890's. The original log church was used as a field hospital just after the battle of Blue Springs. Most of the troops treated on this site were from US General Ambrose Burnside's Corps as they pulled back towards Knoxville. Another field hospital site is located just a stones throw from here & it now has a bank sitting on it. The old church has been used as a movie prop for a couple of lower budget films. I fear for this old structure.....it is now vacant.
Here's one that may be hard to find even with a map. Carter's Station Methodist church at Albany community, E Tenn. This area was settled in the 1780's as a harbor for early pioneers coming into this area. Davy Crockett's grandparents were some of these people. Used as a field headquarters by the 4th, 5th, 10th Kentucky Calvary CSA, also General Vaughn's E Tennesseeans.....they all rode together. My hunch is John Hunt Morgan occupied this building from time to time. This is a magnificent structure with 16 foot windows. If you are by this way on Sunday morning stop in for services.

TL2419b sold For your consideration one McKee & Mason 200 0.58 caliber Carcano bullet. Thomas lists this bullet as a Raleigh pattern. You will find this bullet to be in very good to excellent dug condition with a real nice white patina. All 3 raised rings have very good definition. I measured the middle ring 4 times & came up with 0.565, 0.565, 0.56 & 0.56 inches. Length is 0.915 inches which is by far the shortest 58 Carcano I have had. There is no evidence that this bullet has been cut off. When looking thru the Stelma2 bulletbook I see 5 different 0.69 caliber Carcanos bullets listed. All different in one way or the other. But I see only one 0.54 & one 0.58 caliber listed. Refer to Thomas Roundball to Rimfire4 & you see 7 different 0.69 caliber Carcanos listed #560-566. All different in one way or the other. But again only one 0.54 & one 0.58 caliber listed? Why would there be several different patterns of 0.69 caliber Carcanos...but only one style of a 0.54 & 0.58 caliber Carcano bullets? $130.00
TL2419b annex

In addition Thomas RoundBall to RimFire4 lists a 0.69 caliber #566 Carcano but does not list it in a 0.54 or 0.58 caliber? That would make me think that they do not exist. The bullet to the left is a 0.58 caliber RBRF4 #566 Carcano bullet I found metal detecting NE Tenn a few winters ago. So it is unlisted but does exist. When all this is boiled down all I'm trying to say is maybe the short MM200 bullet listed above is just another pattern of a 0.58 caliber Carcano(Raleigh pattern) nobody has listed. One of those things that make you say hmm.

I have kept my eyes open & these shields do pop up from time to time. A very similar shield can be found at Virginia Civil War Relics under misc. excavated items that is stamped with a 3. These shields may not be CW but they do not appear to be fakes. Any info you provide I will list here. #1 has a stunning plum patina & a few bends...it saw service...just not sure where nor when. All 3 nail holes are complete. Measures about 2 inches tall. #2 Even though the bottom nail hole has torn thru I feel is the better of the 2 shields. A slick green patina. It measures just under 2 inches tall. With both shields you get what you see. Both shields are consistent with know CW era saddle shields except for the numeric stampings. I think they are military but may be other.

Welcome to the waters just off of Chicamacomico, North Carolina. This part of the Outer Banks is known for the first capture of a Federal vessel during the Civil War, October 1861. The Fanny was a small propellor-driven steam ship. Captured by CSS Curlew with help from CSS Junaluska & Raleigh, with union troops aboard. Pressed into service with the pesky Mosquitto Fleet she was used to protect coastal North Carolina. Ran aground & abandoned at the battle of Elizabeth City, NC as Burnside began his aggressive Carolina coastal campaign from Roanoke Island. The Fanny was also known as the first aircraft carrier. While in Union service, on the James River, a manned balloon made an ascent to observe nearby confederate forces. All "previous water-launched balloon flights had taken place from barges". The wreck of The Fanny was discovered in the 1980's & has since been excavated.

Welcome to the banks of the Mississippi River extreme NW Tennessee. When you look across the river from here you see Missouri, not Arkansas. A Tenn State Park for Island #10 & its foritications. The confederate government knew one key factor in securing Southern independence was to control the Mississippi River. In 1862 seven US gunboats with mortar rafts bombarded this "tight double bend" in the river. Island 10 was located in the exact right place to fire on anything heading down river. By the time a gunboat reached Island #10 they were having to maneuver for the "double bend". Confederate gunners knew this & you can bet their guns were trained on this area of the river. After a 3 week bombardment, darkness & high river conditions 2 US boats slipped pass the island. Now them Yankees own down nearly ta Memphis. This is the first piece of the Mississippi River confederate forces had lost in conflict. The confederates evacuated the island, under fire, in pretty good order & were chased thru the swamps some 5 miles nearly to Tiptonville, Tenn. Here better than 6,000 CS troops were captured. A interesting civil war story...a little off the beaten path. Island #10 & fortications are now underwater. My initial reaction while reading the records of this bombardment was "I wonder if anyone had done any shell hunting here"? Beautiful country but this is the most remote part of Tenn I have ever seen.
