First home of 17th US President Andrew Johnson

First home of 17th US President Andrew Johnson at Greeneville, Tenn. Johnson succeeded Abraham Lincoln after he was assassinated at the end of the civil war. Johnson was the only southern Senator to retain his seat in the US Senate at the outbreak of the civil war…..a Union loyalist from a confederate state. At Johnson’s request Lincoln exempted Tenn from the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863…..there would be no freed slaves here. Confederate General John Hunt Morgan was shot & killed some 500 yards from this structure.
