Here are a couple saddle shields I had listed at TennesseeLead a couple years ago but I removed because I could not tell you they were from the civil war era…I still can’t. I have kept my eyes open & these shields do pop up from time to time. A very similar shield can be found at Virginia Civil War Relics under misc. excavated items that is stamped with a 3. These shields may not be CW but they do not appear to be fakes. Any info you provide I will list here. #1 has a stunning plum patina & a few bends…it saw service…just not sure where nor when. All 3 nail holes are complete. Measures about 2 inches tall. #2 Even though the bottom nail hole has torn thru I feel is the better of the 2 shields. A slick green patina. It measures just under 2 inches tall. With both shields you get what you see. Both shields are consistent with know CW era saddle shields except for the numeric stampings. I think they are military but may be other.
